In the Republic of Slovakia, the Ministry of Transport, Posts and Telecommunications is responsible for activities to promote and improve road safety which prepared the National Plan to improve road safety in the second half of 2005, with a view to 2010. This plan is built from „The European Road Safety Action Program“ issued by the European Union based on the so-called White Paper, which aims to reduce the number of fatal traffic accidents on roads of the European Union by 2010 to half compared to 2002.

The plan is based on detailed analysis of current developments in road traffic accidents and experience with the introduction of measures in the past, and includes measures for various sectors interested in the following areas:

  • Vehicle safety
  • Road safety
  • Transport education and awareness
  • Health education, transport psychology
  • Road safety legislation
  • Overseeing the safety and free-flow of road traffic
  • Promotion in the media
  • National co-ordination
  • International cooperation

Implementation of the mentioned areas should achieve a comprehensive reduction of the causes and negative consequences of road traffic accidents in Slovakia. Experts from various organizations and the Government Council for Road Safety work together to achieve this.
